View from the Top

On Tuesday this week, as our time in Florence is running short, we wanted to make sure we made it to the top of the Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo) cupola (dome) before we're gone.

So about 8:45 we set off for the Duomo, and once there paid our admissions and started up towards the top. The climb wasn't the most comfortable, especially considering the close quarters and how many stairs there were. (about 463 in total... phew!)

At first we got to walk around the base of the huge dome inside the church, and get a nice, close view of the painting on the ceiling. Then, we continued on those 463 steps until we finally made it to the top of the cupola, and outside.

The view was fantastic. It's very high, so as you can tell from the photos you can see most of Florence, along with getting a nice peek at the mountains in the distance. We lucked out, too.. because the weather forecast was just for clouds and rain (as has been the case for a couple of weeks, now), but as we were going to Duomo the clouds disappated for a while, just long enough to get some nice photos and enjoy the sites. Bellissima!
